Eve Balfour Founder of the Soil Association. Gladys McArthurMichael Brander. Born in 1898 Eve Balfour became a farmer and after years of experience she began to question modern farming methods. During the 1939 45 war she wrote her best selling The Living Soil outlining her, then revolutionary, organic beliefs. She went on to found the Soil Association and devoted the rest of her life to espousing organic principles in farming, touring the world to promote them until her death in 1990.
